ReLeaf Cedar Rapids

Trees Forever is working alongside the City of Cedar Rapids to replant the tree canopy lost to the August 2020 derecho. The violent derecho that swept through Iowa and Illinois caused unimaginable damage throughout the city with much of the destruction affecting the mature tree canopy. Current estimates show close to 65% of the city’s canopy was destroyed by the 100+ mph straight-line winds.

ReLeaf Cedar Rapids is a comprehensive planning effort led by Trees Forever to replant and grow the urban tree canopy. Trees Forever and the City of Cedar Rapids will work alongside consultant experts including Jeff Speck of Speck & Associates, and Confluence, Inc. The organizations are working collaboratively to develop a long-term tree planting effort that will address the urgency to reforest public spaces and outreach for planting in public and private spaces.

Cedar Rapids residents have long-held their tree canopy as an important part of the identity of the city. The municipality holds a Tree City USA designation and uses the “Tree of Five Seasons” as its logo. Many residents are devastated by the incredible tree loss. Those looking to participate in the recovery process can visit the public input page for up-to-date program information and interactive input exercises.
